08-16-20- "The Life of Joseph – Genesis 37:21-36-38 - JD Tew Joseph’s Father, Jacob was a passive, deceitful man who lacked integrity and showed favoritism… He created an environment for his family that was filled with envy, jealousy, anger and hatred. He had recently given Joseph a coat which signified that Joseph was indeed the favorite. It establishes him as the future head of the clan and it comes with special privileges. He doesn’t have to work anymore. Jacob’s sons had been gone a long time with the flocks, so Jacob sends Joseph out to get a report. This isn’t going to be good. They HATE Joseph! Genesis 37:18-20 - 18 When Joseph’s brothers saw him coming, they recognized him in the distance. As he approached, they made plans to kill him. 19 “Here comes the dreamer!” they said. 20 “Come on, let’s kill him and throw him into one of these cisterns. We can tell our father, ‘A wild animal has eaten him.’ Then we’ll see what becomes of his dreams!” 21 But when Reuben heard of their scheme, he came to Joseph’s rescue. “Let’s not kill him,” he said. 22 “Why should we shed any blood? Let’s just throw him into this empty cistern here in the wilderness. Then he’ll die without our laying a hand on him.” Reuben was secretly planning to rescue Joseph and return him to his father. (He was the oldest and he was responsible to his Father Jacob.) 23 So when Joseph arrived, his brothers ripped off the beautiful robe he was wearing. 24 Then they grabbed him and threw him into the cistern. Now the cistern was empty; there was no water in it. 25 Then, just as they were sitting down to eat, they looked up and saw a caravan of camels in the distance coming toward them. It was a group of Ishmaelite traders taking a load of gum, balm, and aromatic resin from Gilead down to Egypt. First thing they do is rip that Coat off (the symbol of the favoritism) and then throw him into a PIT and then they sit down to eat. No conscience, no conviction, no remorse. Shows you just how much they hated Joseph. 26 Judah said to his brothers, “What will we gain by killing our brother? We’d have to cover up the crime. 27 Instead of hurting him, let’s sell him to those Ishmaelite traders. After all, he is our brother—our own flesh and blood!” And his brothers agreed. They weren’t concerned about Joseph, it’s all about them. If we kill him we’ll have to cover up the crime. Let’s just sell him and make a little money in the process. 28 So when the Ishmaelites, who were Midianite traders, came by, Joseph’s brothers pulled him out of the cistern and sold him to them for twenty pieces of silver. And the traders took him to Egypt. Gen 37:29-36 - 29 Some time later, Reuben returned to get Joseph out of the cistern. When he discovered that Joseph was missing, he tore his clothes in grief. 30 Then he went back to his brothers and lamented, “The boy is gone! What will I do now?” As the oldest Rueben was responsible to Jacob… Still, he wasn’t concerned about Joseph but what impact this was going to have on him. “What will I do now?” Reuben, like the others were more concerned with themselves than they were with Joseph and their Father Jacob. 31 Then the brothers killed a young goat and dipped Joseph’s robe in its blood. 32 They sent the beautiful robe to their father with this message: “Look at what we found. Doesn’t this robe belong to your son?” Galatians 6:7 - Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows. Most of his life Jacob has deceived others and now his on sons are deceiving him in the death of his favorite son Joseph. Not only did they hate Joseph, I believe there was a great deal of anger and hatred for their Father. No remorse, no conviction, no conscience for their actions. Doesn’t this robe belong to your son (Not our brother,...
